As a first time mom I was haunted by hundreds of fears, some rational, some not so much (FYI: the baby will not suffocate with if he puts his hands in his mouth.) I was worried about having the right crib, the perfect bedding, the ideal set of onesies. I spent hours doing internet research on anything and everything (thank you pregnancy insomnia!). It came to the point where I was second guessing my every decision even before the baby was born. A few nesting months later Evan came into the world kicking and screaming. He couldn’t have been any more perfect and I couldn’t have been any more clueless but I just took it all in and started this journey into motherhood.
A few weeks into his life, Evan started getting some mild rashes. I was very concerned that it has the Bangkok water or maybe I was just giving him allergies thru my milk. My husband later confessed to me that he had had sensitive skin since he was a baby and that Evan had probably inherited something other than his good looks. He suggested I changed his baby soap and lotion and we would take it from there. If you are wondering, yes, my husband is the rational and practical one in this parenting journey, and he is often right (grunt).
A few more hours spent online I decided I needed to find a product that would be gentle on my new baby’s sensitive skin and why not made in an environmentally friendly manner. In came California Baby. The more I read about the product the more I wanted to try them. After all, what could be better than a product that doesn’t have any harsh or harmful ingredients, no synthetics, no common allergens, and no pesticides and is scented solely with essential oils.
My first encounter with the California Baby brand was in the form of the Super Sensitive Shampoo and Body Wash and the Super Sensitive Body Lotion. Immediately Evan’s rashes started to subside and I was happy to have found a product that was made with all natural ingredients and wasn’t animal tested. Living in the tropics we soon included the Super Sensitive Sunscreen into our repertoire of baby body care and haven’t had a sunburned baby since.
Joshua and Evan are little fishies and they absolutely love splashing around in the pool every few days. The tropical weather of the archipelago can be very damaging to the boys’ sensitive skin so we make sure they are protected every time we go out. Our current go-to is the California Baby Super Sensitive SPF 18 Sunscreen. I love that even though it moisturizes the boys’ skin, it is not greasy at all and it doesn’t stain their clothes or bathing suits. The sunscreen is water-resistant and will stay on their skin for up to 40 minutes, enough time to release some energy and start getting ready for a nap! We are able to put the sunscreen on their faces and bodies without a problem and they boys don’t really mind it since it is fragrance free.
After a test drive in the water I can attest that the sunscreen resisted the water and restlessness of the boys! I was quite surprised Evan didn’t want to scrape it off and that Josh didn’t try to eat it; but even if he had I wouldn’t be too worried since it’s non-toxic.

As a mother I know I’m constantly aware of what I put in my babies, now I can be sure that what I put ON them won’t harm them in any way.
Hi Anna.. thanks a lot for posting this info.. I was wondering about safe sunscreen for babies. And this article came at the right time for me. I’ll try to buy them online in Jakarta. Out of curiosity, do you normally buy this product in the supermarket or pharmacy when you are in the US ? I have plan to go to the US, and I may need to buy some from there too perhaps. Thanks.
Hi Wanda! I am glad you found the information useful! We have been using California Baby since Evan was a few weeks old. I do buy it at the supermarket in the US. They have them at all drugstores and in most supermarkets. Have a wonderful day!
