Last September, or should I say, the previous to last September, when we visited La Riviera Maya we had the opportunity to snorkel with the magnificent Whale Sharks. These creatures are just incredibly gentle and so gorgeous. I still can’t believe we were able to see so many. We were very lucky. Two days before our scheduled trip it rained, a lot. I mean it was something like a small hurricane. We thought our trip was going to get cancelled. I had booked this trip months before and we planned for my dad and my hubby’s dad to join us.
The day before our trip, and after a few choppy dive boat rides, I called the shop with a glimmer of hope that it was still on. They gave it a go and a few hours later we were on a boat on our way to see the place where these beautiful sharks live during the summer.
I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect. I had seen videos and photos of them before but nothing compares to being in their presence. These guys are just huge and although they seem very chill and relaxed they are fast swimmers. After all, they do have immense dorsal fins and a huge tail. Adrenaline at its highest, I dared to get close to them. As close as we were told to and taking full advantage of my camera’s zoom lens. I was just in awe of these guys.
We were told to take turns going in the water so we would go in in groups of 3 or 4. After about 40 minutes some people didn’t want to go in any more so I took advantage of this and stayed there as much as I could. I was tired of swimming around but I just wanted to savor every second with these guys. I was able to get some cool videos to show Evan and Josh and I just daydreamed of the day when I can bring them to see these amazing animals. I know that I have to enjoy the boys during every stage but I can totally see my boys swimming with these giants and having a blast.
In the middle of the big blue, surrounded by such enchanting creatures there’s nothing else to do but to surrender to God’s presence and delight in his creation. It is just crazy to think about all the magnificent creatures He created and the fact that He allows us to enjoy living among them.
If you ever get a chance to swim with the Whale Sharks, please do so. Whether in South Africa, Mexico the Middle East or Africa, if you get invited to a whale shark encounter, just do it! It’s a once in a lifetime experience. It is so humbling and exhilarating that you might end up like me, hoping to do it again soon.
Amazing! We have not yet had the opportunity to see whale sharks on any of our diving/snorkeling adventures. In Utila earlier this year we were hoping to catch a glimpse of whale sharks but didn’t. Great pictures!
